About the Topic:
Israel is a complicated country; Jerusalem, its capital, is not only complex, it is also diverse. Along with its communities of secular, modern Orthodox and ultra-religious Jews and an often hostile Arab community - the city is challenged on many other levels.
Nearly 41 years after reunification, Jerusalem remains a city riven with deep economic uncertainty. The poverty rate is higher than for almost any other part of Israel: The Jerusalem Institute for Israeli Studies has found that 23.5% of Jews and 72.5% of non-Jews live in poverty in Jerusalem proper.
Among the most decisive factors contributing to poverty in Jerusalem is the migration of the two highest wage earning groups - secular Jews and modern orthodox Jews - from the city to surrounding areas.
Both of the presenting speakers are passionate advocates for Jerusalem as a high tech center and as a source of continuing development. They will discuss the ways in which the city can be saved from becoming either an economic backwater or else a political football between competing political, ideological and religious interests.
