His home was also home to Claus Philipp Maria Justinian Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg< a German army officer and Catholic aristocrat who was one of the leading members of the failed 20 July plot of 1944 to kill Adolf Hitler and remove the Nazi Party from power in World War II Germany. His father, a German officer, was sworn to defend and obey Adolf Hitler. Many years after the war he grudgingly admitted to his son that he knew about the murder of Jews but chose to ignore the evidence; his inaction in stark contrast to the decision made by Stauffenberg. His father’s inability to admit to what his son saw as his cardinal mistake in life led to deep conflict and the ultimate dissolution of their relationship. From conversations with Stauffenberg’s widow and personal study, Dr. Wollschlaeger tried to discern what, in contrast to his own father, had motivated Stauffenberg to break his oath and attempt tyrannicide.
