Biography of Brend Wollschlaeger

Bernd Wollschlaeger was born in 1958 in , the son of a highly decorated World War II tank commander. His home was also home to Claus Philipp Maria Justinian Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg< a German army officer and Catholic aristocrat who was one of the leading members of the failed 20 July plot of 1944 to kill Adolf Hitler and remove the Nazi Party from power in World War II Germany.

His father, a German officer, was sworn to defend and obey Adolf Hitler. Many years after the war he grudgingly admitted to his son that he knew about the murder of Jews but chose to ignore the evidence; his inaction in stark contrast to the decision made by Stauffenberg. His father’s inability to admit to what his son saw as his cardinal mistake in life led to deep conflict and the ultimate dissolution of their relationship. From conversations with Stauffenberg’s widow and personal study, Dr. Wollschlaeger tried to discern what, in contrast to his own father, had motivated Stauffenberg to break his oath and attempt tyrannicide.
That journey led him not only to a rejection of his father's Nazi past, but to a study of the suffering of the Jewish people, an ultimate conversion to Judaism and a decision to serve in the Israel Defense Forces. Dr. Wollschlaeger's experiences are recounted in his moving book A German Life and in his short film, Stauffenberg and My Life In the Shadow of a Hero.
