About the Topic:
In October, 2014 two parents of a child at the Manhattan Beach Middle School discovered that their child had been assigned homework which taught the Islamic faith. The students had been required by their teacher to learn the five pillars of the Islam by heart and to recite certain sections of the Koran. Furious about this infusion of religion into the classroom, the parents confronted the teacher and the principal at the school only to be informed that the curriculum mandated such instruction for seventh graders. When they asked whether Christianity or Judaism were given the same attention, they were told that they were - but in sixth grade.
That proved untrue and it became clear to the parents that the children at the school were being exposed to a three week course on Islam - not the history of Islam - but the faith, without the provision of any other countervailing information. Since that time the parents have received national attention and have been informed of dozens of other incidents around the country of this violation of the separation of religion and state in our public schools.
This important forum will seek to identify who wrote the curriculum, how it passed muster in the California Department of Education, why its teaching is wrong and how ordinary citizens can join a campaign to challenge our legislators to review and replace it.
